Okay...so...maybe it's a LITTLE big for a pocket survival kit. But, it's certainly small enough to just throw into a coat pocket or a small pack.
Thanks to Izzy at http://timbuk2andtippycanoe.blogspot.com/ for making me aware of Walmart's new cell phone dry box. I picked up a couple for mine and the Mrs. PJ's Motorola Droids. Which, by the way, fit great in these dry boxes.
Izzy made up a pocket survival kit in one and I thought I'd give it a shot myself.
The first thing I did was swap out the clip on the end of the lanyard. I didn't trust it quite enough and I had a couple small carabiners laying around.

A quick snip with a pair of dikes removed the existing clip and let me swap in the carabiners.

I got about 15 feet of paracord wrapped around the outside of the drybox held in place with a cord lock.

Here's everything I got into the drybox.
- Duct Tape Wrapped Card
- Aluminum Foil
- P-38 Can Opener
- 15' of Snare Wire
- Fox 40 Rescue Howler Whistle
- Pax Survival Keychain Oil Lighter http://www.survival-pax.com/Keychain-Oil-Lighter.html
- Ferro Rod (Thanks Tonto)
- Ceramic Sharpening Rod
- Button Compass(Thanks again Tonto)
- Streamlight Nano
- Gerber Ridge Knife http://www.amazon.com/Gerber-45874-Ridge-Knife-Black/dp/B00006LPPR/ref=sr_1_2?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1300030301&sr=1-2
- Water Purification Tablets
- Vaseline Cottonballs
- OTC Meds (Immodium, Tylenol, & Benedryl)
- Alcohol Swabs
- Safety Pins and Sewing Needles
- The Cutest Little Spork I Have Ever Seen - I picked it up at, of all places, a Ren-Fest a couple of years ago.
I have to say, for making kits like this, the tiny little ziplock bags are great. I think I paid a whopping $1.95 for a package of 3 million of them.
Everything packs snugly into the drybox. It's tight enough that nothing rattles around in it. Yet, it's not so tight as to be Chinese Puzzle getting it back into the box.
It's a last ditch kind of kit. It's small enough though that I won't think twice about carrying it. I wish I had something to carry water that would fit into the box. But, I almost ALWAYS have my steel water bottle with me. Or, at the very least, I'm sure I can find a plastic water or pop bottle to use.
